Benham Falls is one of the closest attractions to Sunriver. From Sunriver you drive north on Hwy 97 four miles to the Lava Lands Visitor Center. At the visitor center you can pick up a parking pass and a map and follow the signs to the Benham Falls parking area, about four more miles.
At the parking area there is historical information, a picnic area with barbecues, play areas and pet areas. From the parking area you can get on the 3/4 mile path to Benham Falls.
The path follows the Deschutes river and the scenery is breathtaking. There are also signs along the way pointing out how the area has been used by early travelers, logging operations and railroads.
Just a short walk from the parking area is the foot bridge across the river (see photo on next page) and just up the way is the wide shady path (see photo on next page) that leads to the falls. Be sure to keep a lookout for wildlife and the beautiful flowers. Once you reach the falls you will see how the wild river roars between the rock walls. Over 6,000 years ago volcanic activity pushed in on the river forming the falls we see today.
When you pass the falls the path narrows and continues for several miles along the Deschutes river. There are many wonderful viewpoints and meadows perfect for a quiet lunch or a leisurely afternoon nap.
Benham Falls is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The Newberry National Volcanic Monument is an area consisting of over 50,000 acres that stretch from Benham Falls in the north to Paulina Peak in the south and contains lakes, lava flows and spectacular geologic features. The Monument’s summit is 7,985 st. Paulina Peak, showcasing views of the Oregon Cascades and out across the high desert plateaus and valleys.
